The history of Bitcoin in Singapore

Map of Singapore

In 2013, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) came out with a relatively hands-off approach to the introduction of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies by claiming that businesses wanting to accept Bitcoin in exchange for goods and services should be allowed to do so as it is a commercial decision and NOT a decision in which the Monetary Authority should be involved. But that’s not to say that the financial department completely opened their arms to the idea. In fact, MAS has warned users of the risks associated with exchanging unregulated currencies digitally, pointing out that if Bitcoin (for example) ceases to operate, there would likely not be any party responsible for refunding those seeking recourse.

The current status of Bitcoin in Singapore

Bitcoin network concept

Perhaps in an effort to address this above claim, on August 1, 2017, MAS delivered a follow-up statement clarifying that they would, after all, impose some government regulation over cryptocurrencies to ensure safeguards were in place. Businesses that offer or issue digital tokens, including Bitcoin and initial coin offerings (ICOs), would be regulated by the MAS, provided that such crypto-tokens fall within the definition of "securities" regulated under Singapore's security laws. And in 2019, the MAS made it’s boldest statement yet by referring to bitcoin as a digital payment token for the purposes of the Payment Services Act.

Nowadays, buying Bitcoin in Singapore is typically achieved in one of two ways: users can either go online to one of many bitcoin exchanges, or they can visit any local ATM and exchange Singapore dollars Bitcoin instantly.

Anybody looking to deal with a cryptocurrency like Bitcoin must have a dedicated wallet for storing their assets. Some of the most popular exchanges for buying Bitcoin in Singapore include Coinmama, eToro, and Luno.
